Pools in a planned 1920s city

Coral Gables was planned in the 1920s by George Merrick, and much of it still looks the part: Mediterranean Revival homes, barrel-tile roofs, coral-rock walls and streets lined with banyans and live oaks. The city's best-known pool, the Venetian Pool, was carved out of an old coral-rock quarry. Many private pools here share that heritage, with keystone coping, older plaster and plumbing that has been updated more than once.

Keystone and natural coral stone look beautiful but are porous. The wrong chemicals, or water that is out of balance, can etch and stain them quickly. We keep pH and calcium in a gentle range and choose cleaning products that are safe for natural stone. Under the Gables' famous canopy, falling leaves and flowers add tannins and phosphates, so these pools need attentive brushing and filter care.

On the bayfront in Cocoplum and Gables Estates, pools are larger, often with spas, water features and automation, and they sit in salt air. Those systems get a closer look at equipment condition every week.

Between those two extremes, the Riviera section and the streets off Coral Way hold the typical Gables pool: mid-size, decades old, resurfaced once or twice, and behind a house whose owners care a great deal about appearances. Further south, some homes back onto canals that lead out to Biscayne Bay, and their equipment pads see more moisture and salt than the ones inland.

What Coral Gables pools deal with

Keystone and coral-stone coping

Porous natural stone stains and etches when water is out of balance. We use stone-safe products and keep chemistry gentle. Harsh acid treatments stay away from the coping.

Heavy canopy debris

Banyans, oaks and flowering trees drop leaves and petals year round. Frequent skimming and brushing keep tannins and algae down.

Large waterfront systems

Cocoplum and Gables Estates pools often combine spas, water features, heaters and automation. We maintain the whole system, not just the water.

Through the year

A year of pool care in Coral Gables

  • Late winter and spring

Oak pollen and new leaf drop peak. Filters load up quickly, so we clean them more often. Petals left on the floor overnight can leave faint marks.

  • Summer rains

Afternoon storms and warm water push algae growth in shady yards. We keep chlorine matched to stabilizer levels and give shaded deep ends extra brushing.

  • Storm season

Large trees mean heavy debris after a storm. We clear the pool and check equipment before restarting it.

Coral Gables FAQ

Questions from Coral Gables pool owners

Can you clean pools with keystone coping without damaging it?

Yes. Keystone and coral stone are porous, so we avoid harsh acids and keep the water balanced to prevent etching and staining. We can also treat existing stains on the stone.

Why does my Coral Gables pool get algae in the corners?

Shade from the canopy plus leaf debris creates perfect conditions for mustard and black algae. Targeted brushing, correct chlorine levels and good circulation fix it.

Do you service larger pools in Cocoplum and Gables Estates?

Yes, including pools with attached spas, water features, heaters and automation systems. We maintain the full system and flag equipment concerns early.

Do I need city approval to replace pool equipment in Coral Gables?

Coral Gables has its own permitting and design review, and some equipment work requires permits. As a licensed pool contractor (CPC1456836) we tell you what your job needs before we start.

Our pool sits behind a coral-rock wall with a narrow side gate. Is that a problem?

Not usually. Garden walls and tight gates are common around older Gables homes, and our equipment is sized to get through them. Let us know the gate code or which entrance to use, and walls and plantings are left as we found them.

Which Coral Gables ZIP codes do you service?

We cover 33134, 33143 and 33146, which span the city from the North Gables and Coral Way down to the waterfront neighborhoods south of US-1. Homes near the city line sometimes carry a neighboring ZIP, so if yours looks different, call with the address and we'll confirm it's on our Gables route.
